From Cuban and Spanish roots, the tango developed in the slums of Buenos Aires, It’s what the tango has evolved into that has taken the world by storm. Much credit for that is due to three musicians. Michael Sahl and William Schimmel first came together for a recording. Mary Rowell joined later and Tango Project was born. Their first album was Stereo Review’s Album of the Year. The next two widened their worldwide audience. Tango Project has gone on, melding the tango’s visceral appeal to contemporary music.
